SSRC is Hiring: Contract Editor for MediaWell

As part of the Social Science Research Council’s technology portfolio, MediaWell seeks to highlight the different streams of scholarship on the evolving relationship between media, technology, and politics. Our work supports research and outreach that deepens the historical, cultural, and political contexts for understanding mis- and disinformation, with a particular focus on how power structures dynamically shape information. To improve MediaWell’s ability to inform public discussions, we plan to highlight the research that could inform tech policy. This work seeks to fill a pressing need. While efforts are underway at all levels and branches of government in the U.S. to form regulations that would govern the tech industry, regulators and policymakers are not always sufficiently connected to good evidence to inform their work. Researchers who study the impacts of digital technologies on public life are continuing to produce essential insights and contexts for policy, but without a means for translation, these insights will not be effectively put to work to drive meaningful change.

In partnership with SSRC staff, the editor will:

  * Recruit consistently high-quality content for MediaWell on a range of topics related to technology policy and governance. This includes identifying potential topics for special projects, multimedia content, research reviews and essays on policy-relevant research on technology, social media, racialized mis- and disinformation, digital culture, AI, and other topics.
  * With input from the program director, develop a publication schedule for MediaWell that ensures regular posting of new material and the promotion of archived articles as relevant.
  * With the support of the editorial associate and under the direction of the program director, provide the principal editorial oversight for submitted pieces. This includes critical exchanges with authors to assist in the development of their submission, including its principal focus, the clarity of its key points, and the accessibility of its prose.
  * Assist in updating and maintaining MediaWell’s news feed, Zotero library, events calendar, and scholars database.
  * Assist the editorial associate in producing social media content to promote new MediaWell publications and related SSRC projects.

Qualifications:

  * ABD or PhD in the social sciences or humanities in media studies, sociology, political science, information studies, or other related fields. We would consider PhD candidates who are writing their dissertations.
  * Knowledge of current academic research relevant to technology policy and an interest in translating research to policy arenas.
  * Excellent organizational skills; attention to detail and a high degree of professionalism. Excellent interpersonal skills; team player with demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently and respond flexibly to changing demands.
  * Strong writing skills for a range of audiences.

The work will take place at the SSRC offices in Brooklyn, New York, though remote work is possible. This is a one-year, contract position with an hourly wage of $30/hr, not a staff position. Expected hours would be about 5-10 hours per week. Applicants will need to have legal status to work in the United States, as SSRC cannot sponsor visas for this position. Interested applicants should send a resume and cover letter to mediawell at ssrc.org by April 1.
