Dear all,

As the nature of the discourse has changed over the ~60 emails distributed so far today, I’m left wondering if this is the right medium through which to have this discussion (especially as some views will, realistically and understandably, not converge).

The AoIR statement of Inclusivity* would suggest that some of the actions proposed in this thread are in contradiction (noting the reference to nationality).
The AoIR description of the mailing list** suggests it may not be the appropriate medium for this discussion, unless this is considered ‘information dissemination’ which has typically included CfPs, conference announcements, research news, etc..

Perhaps it might instead be more appropriate to have any related suggestion/proposal be submitted directly to the AoIR Executive Committee for consideration and potential action.

Thank you for your message Sky,
Thanks for your bravery and please don’t despair. I was initially shocked
by the silence here, but soon didn’t expect much else because the moral
arguments has led to trench tactics in a lot of formal spaces but also in
the general catch-22 (risk being called antisemitic/condoning Hamas is a
real concern for poc and junior academics). What is indeed different is
that this has especially dominated professional academic spaces—previously
the purvey of critical, anti-war, transgressive, intellectual thinking. We
can see the impact of decades of neoliberalism and managerial task forces.
But thankfully our professional groups are not a barometer. Obviously the
rift between ordinary peoples - both in the UK and across the world and our
institutions/politicians - has never been this wide. It’s exactly as Adi
Kuntsman outlines, for which I thank them, by creating a false Us vs Them
framework and by disseminating government-echoed hasbara that is delivered
as ordinary voices, merely concern, the discussions are derailed before
they even started. but as Adi reminds, this is totally expected so thank
you for reminding us to not waste our time on this too much.

in the heated international debate. "yes but". Somehow, the years of
Israeli brutal occupation of Gaza and its military and economic control of

omitted in the requests like this, to focus on what has "triggered" the

No, I do not excuse Hamas or what happened in October. However, I do think
Israel is a violent settler colonial state, ejoying international
immpunity- for a very long time and especially in the last 3 months. Yes,
the attack on Israelis on the 7th of October is beyond horrific and like
many other people with Jewish/Israeli connections, I mourn every child,
elder, family assaulted or displaced. But no, this does not excise the wipe
out of lives, hopes, schools, hospitals, doctors, journalists in Gaza- not
in the last three months and not before- and its a great shame to any
Jewish person to allow this to be done in their name. I abhore Israel's
manipulation of pain and death, and its abandonment of its own citizens
including those the kidnapped. If anyone wants to bring up names and mourn
Harry Potters -- which we should! ---make sure these aren't only limited to
your own community. The faces and names of every Gazan child killed, and
their devastated parents if they were lucky enough to survive, should haunt

Especially as every university in Gaza had been partially or fully
destroyed, hundreds of professors and academics have been killed, and
academic institutions outside Gaza have engaged in targeting and
suppression of pro-Palestine speech, I am fully supportive of an academic
boycott and a clear stance of public solidarity and action. Also interested
in any research efforts to better understand internet research in the
Palestinian context.

Given the online and livestreamed nature of this genocide where we've seen
people telling us the horrific atrocities committed against them in real
time on all our internet platforms, often followed by news of their murder,
it is imperative for an association of internet researchers to take a
stance.

Not to mention the nature of online suppression, disinformation, doxxing,
and harassment that has been at the center of a campaign to justify and
even celebrate the murder of over 30,000 people and the forced starvation
and displacement of millions amidst an intentional destruction of
lifesaving healthcare and telecommunication (including internet) facilities.

that there was also a response and a discussion within the
organisation to the Black Lives Matter movement, among other issues.


Of course, I am aware that academic organisations will not often
respond to international events. Perhaps the silence so far is
entirely for this reason. Perhaps we are afraid that if we speak up on
this we will also be asked to speak about Sudan, Congo, and other
issues (would that be
terrible?)


However, I think that we must also acknowledge the chilling effect
that many academics and others experience specifically on the matter of
Israel.


Antisemitism is a real and significant problem in the world. However,
