Vikki I do not suggest any such thing, it's a strange interpretation and rather unkind how you deliberately word it as suggestive of undemocratic motives. Besides trying to protect activists and those with racialised characteristics (this is exactly what happened on other lists) by warning against falling in the trap of deliberate derailment as is pretty typical of political controversy on listservs, I was indeed also suggesting that once the initial responses are clear and collected, those people continue to organise outside this infrastructure. You surely don't think organising drafts that includes exchanging lists of examples to how to formulate demands is to be done one this list? I've never seen that but by all means go for it. I'd be surprised anyone would want their inboxes clogged that way -and its usually  very off-putting leading  to potential allies withdrawing - but I am open to try if thats a better approach. Just don't use this argument in order to actually try delegitimise another point, okay? Appreciated!

It seems to me that Sky was assessing AoIR members' support for making a statement, and from the responses to their initial message, the support for such a statement is mixed at best.

If you are suggesting taking the conversation into a private forum to craft a statement that represents the individuals involved in drafting such a statement rather than AoIR as a whole, that is of course your right. If you are suggesting doing so in order to present some kind of finished product to a membership where a minority of people have weighed in with vastly different viewpoints, that strikes me as neither transparent nor democratic.

I was initially shocked by the silence here, but soon didn’t expect much else because the moral arguments has led to trench tactics in a lot of formal spaces but also in the general catch-22 (risk being called antisemitic/condoning Hamas is a real concern for poc and junior academics). What is indeed different is that this has especially dominated professional academic spaces—previously the purvey of critical, anti-war, transgressive, intellectual thinking. A response like one by Ayelet below is expected - we hear it all too often in the heated international debate. "yes but". Somehow, the years of Israeli brutal occupation of Gaza and its military and economic control of it which has not at all stopped after Israel's so called "withdrawal"; and the 75-and-counting years of Israeli settler colonialism are conveniently omitted in the requests like this, to focus on what has "triggered" the war,  as if the trigger happened in a vacuum.

No, I do not excuse Hamas or what happened in October. However, I do think Israel is a violent settler colonial state, ejoying international immpunity- for a very long time and especially in the last 3 months. Yes, the attack on Israelis on the 7th of October is beyond horrific and like many other people with Jewish/Israeli connections, I mourn every child, elder, family assaulted or displaced. But no, this does not excise the wipe out of lives, hopes, schools, hospitals, doctors, journalists in Gaza- not in the last three months and not before- and its a great shame to any Jewish person to allow this to be done in their name. I abhore Israel's manipulation of pain and death, and its abandonment of its own citizens including those the kidnapped. If anyone wants to bring up names and mourn Harry Potters -- which we should! ---make sure these aren't only limited to your own community. The faces and names of every Gazan child killed, and their devastated parents if they were lucky enough to survive, should haunt us all, if we have any humanty left in us. And yet I don't see their names on this thread

Thanks so much for this Sky.

Especially as every university in Gaza had been partially or fully destroyed, hundreds of professors and academics have been killed, and academic institutions outside Gaza have engaged in targeting and suppression of pro-Palestine speech, I am fully supportive of an academic boycott and a clear stance of public solidarity and action. Also interested in any research efforts to better understand internet research in the Palestinian context.

Given the online and livestreamed nature of this genocide where we've seen people telling us the horrific atrocities committed against them in real time on all our internet platforms, often followed by news of their murder, it is imperative for an association of internet researchers to take a stance.

Not to mention the nature of online suppression, disinformation, doxxing, and harassment that has been at the center of a campaign to justify and even celebrate the murder of over 30,000 people and the forced starvation and displacement of millions amidst an intentional destruction of lifesaving healthcare and telecommunication (including internet) facilities.

Thank you for initiating this, and please count me in for any efforts moving forward.
