Yes, many thanks, Sky and all the respondents so far, indeed.

FWIW: I have been wrestling with all of this - in some ways, for more than 5 decades, and from both large perspectives (e.g., Just War Theory, Holocaust studies ..) and more focused ones, e.g., my wife's experience in Israel and Palestine as an Ecumenical Accompanier (see https://eappi.org/en/), and, most specifically, whether or not to respond positively to a request from an Israeli university for a faculty evaluation.

I have been appalled beyond all sense and words by much of what has happened with and since the horrific attacks on Oct. 7. I'll let the International Court of Justice determine whether Israel's clearly disproportionate responses (in the fairly clear definitions of Just War Theory) indeed count as war crimes and genocide. (All but certainly in the first case, and rather clearly in the second, so far as I can gather, FWIW.) 
But the horrific daily slaughter of the innocents - far, far more than actual combatants - in Gaza and the West Bank, coupled with the destruction of all universities in Gaza and what appear to be planned and targeted killings of academics: there's just no room left in my tiny little mind for moral equivocation and uncertainty.

We can and should debate whether an apparent genocide unfolding before our eyes calls for a statement of condemnation / solidarity from AoIR. 
What I think is beyond debate, at least in my tiny little mind: the cultural genocide that has been taking placing for some time on many different fronts and levels now includes academic institutions, professors, students, employees. 
Whatever our responses to the former, I would call for our developing a strong statement specifically regarding the latter, as events that directly impact and concern us as academics and as an academic organization.
Ideally, such a statement would include dialogue with and consideration for our Israeli colleagues as well as our Palestinian ones. I am rather certain that more than one or two of the former are as deeply appalled and horrified as many of the rest of us outside of Israel and Palestine: but that given the current complexity of conditions, they may well find it too difficult to speak or protest openly. If I am right about this, facilitating such a conversation will be that much more difficult indeed.

Given the online and livestreamed nature of this genocide where we've seen

stance.


Not to mention the nature of online suppression, disinformation, doxxing,
and harassment that has been at the center of a campaign to justify and
even celebrate the murder of over 30,000 people and the forced starvation
and displacement of millions amidst an intentional destruction of
lifesaving healthcare and telecommunication (including internet) facilities.
