Job Description
The Division of Emerging Media Studies at Boston University seeks to hire a
Tenure-Track Assistant Professor whose research uses computational
communication methods to answer questions of substantive importance to the
field of communication.

About the College of Communication
Established in 1947, the College of Communication (COM) at Boston
University is a large college with three departments: Mass Communication,
Advertising and Public Relations; Journalism; and Film Television. COM’s
student population exceeds 2,200 in its B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. programs. COM
integrates a strong liberal arts core with a focus on preparing students
for careers as communication professionals. The faculty represents a blend
of award-winning scholars and award-winning practitioners. BU enjoys an

The Division of Emerging Media Studies believes that the cultural and

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in communication, social/behavioral
science, or related field such as computer science or data science by the
start date of July 1, 2024; peer-reviewed research publications related to
the study of communication; and an active research program using
computational and/or data science methods to answer substantive questions
with importance to the field of communication. Areas of methodological
specialization might include machine learning, natural language processing,
text analytics, artificial intelligence, the gathering and analysis of
digital trace data, and data visualization. Successful candidates might
apply these techniques to any of a range of substantive areas, including
health communication, political communication, the psychology of
communication, communication through digital or mobile media, social
movement studies, or others.

The successful candidate will teach in the College of Communication, and
therefore should be prepared to deliver courses at the undergraduate, MA
and PhD levels. In particular, candidates should be able to deliver courses
on research methods, data visualization and analytics using python and/or
R, human-computer interaction, and/or UX design, as well as focused
seminars on the candidate’s areas of greatest expertise and interest. A
typical course load includes teaching two courses per semester
