ATTENTION!

Wed 15 Nov 2023 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

King's College London, K0.20, King's Building, Strand campus, WC2R 2LS

   Are your eyeballs truly yours? What do you focus on in the 24-hour news
   cycle, interspersed with the constant flow of social media? Is your
   phone always on? Do you have too many emails to answer, too many
   requests to follow up, too many demands placed on your time? How do you
   tune out the noise? Are you paying enough attention?

   Join KCL researchers for a series of short ‘lightning’ talks about
   attention, presented from a variety of scholarly disciplines: from
   literature, philosophy, education and digital humanities through to
   psychology, neuroscience, politics and business. Be part of the mapping
   of the new field of Attention Studies, in which academic research meets
   a wider socio-ethical obligation to figure out what it means to live
   well – with and through technology.

   This event is organised by the [1]Centre for Attention Studies, which
   is part of the Digital Futures Institute at King's College London.

   The talks, chaired and introduced by the Centre's Director [2]Professor
   Joanna Zylinska, will be followed by a discussion and a reception.

   Speakers include:
     * Professor Clare Carlisle Tresch (Theology and Religious Studies)
     * Dr Michael Collins (English)
     * Professor Steven Connor (Digital Futures Institute)
     * Professor Patrick Ffrench (Languages, Literatures and Cultures)
     * Professor Colette Hirsch (Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience)
     * Professor Dirk vom Lehn (Business School)
     * Professor Paul McDonald (Media, Culture and Creative Industries)
     * Professor Mark Pennington (Political Economy)
     * Dr Oliver Runswick (Psychology)
     * Dr Nick Srnicek (Digital Humanities)
     * Professor Edmund Sonuga-Barke (Psychology, Psychiatry and
       Neuroscience)
     * Dr Mira Vogel (Education)
     * Dr Feng Zhu (Digital Humanities)

   Programme
     * 2-2.10pm: Welcome and introduction to Attention Studies at KCL
     * 2.10-4pm: Lightning talks on attention from a variety of
       disciplines and positions
     * 4-5pm: Reception: networking and follow-up conversations
